GitHub.com has a DOM problem. With code syntax highlighting, line numbers, and code snippets on diff pages, the DOM elements can skyrocket into the tens of thousands. This can result in some very complex and unique CSS performance problems that caused some scary slow pages to sometimes crash your browser.

We solved these problems with performance tweaks turning page loads from seconds into milliseconds, efficient CSS selectors matching fewer elements, and writing hundreds of kilobytes of less code.
